Choosing the right flooring is one of the most important decisions you'll make in any home renovation project. Your floor isn’t just what you walk on—it sets the tone for the entire space. At Nestovate, we believe the perfect floor combines beauty, durability, and practicality to suit your lifestyle.
Whether you’re updating a single room or overhauling an entire property, this guide will help you navigate the wide world of flooring with confidence.
We have walked on a lot of floors in our life—literally. From weathered wooden planks in 100-year-old homes to glossy new tiles in modern apartments, every project we take on with Nestovate starts from the ground up. And over the years, we have learned this simple truth:
The floor is more than just something you walk on—it’s where life happens.
We have seen kids take their first steps on freshly laid vinyl. We have watched families gather around coffee tables on warm hardwood, helped couples choose tiles for their dream kitchen after months of planning. Flooring sets the tone for your space—and your story.
If you're about to start a renovation, here’s what we have learned (and shared with countless clients) about choosing the right flooring, patterns, and materials. We hope it helps you make a choice you’ll love living with.
The Big Question: Which Flooring Should You Choose?
Let us take you back to one of our early renovation jobs—an old house with creaky floorboards and water stains from years of wear. The homeowners wanted something that looked classic but could handle their two playful dogs. We went with engineered wood—the perfect balance between beauty and durability. And they still message me saying how much they love it.
Here’s a breakdown of the materials we usually recommend, depending on your lifestyle:
Hardwood
There’s nothing like the character of real wood. It’s warm, elegant, and ages beautifully. Great for bedrooms and living rooms—but keep in mind, it needs care. One client called us after their kids spilled juice on the new oak floor. (We fixed it, but it was a lesson in quick cleanup!)
Laminate
A good budget-friendly option. It’s improved a lot in the last decade and now comes in designs that mimic real wood. One couple we worked with wanted the hardwood look without the hardwood price, and laminate delivered. Just keep it dry—laminate and water don’t mix.
Vinyl (LVT or LVP)
One of our personal favourites for families. Waterproof, stylish, and practically indestructible. We installed LVP in a rental property last year, and it still looks brand new despite tenants and toddlers.
Tile
The go-to for bathrooms and kitchens. Cool to the touch, timeless, and so many design options. Grout needs some TLC, but tile lasts forever. We have done intricate herringbone patterns that turned simple bathrooms into stunning spaces.
Carpet
Soft, cozy, and great for bedrooms—but be prepared for more maintenance. One client loved the feel underfoot but regretted not choosing a stain-resistant option after their cat… well, let’s just say accidents happen.
The Magic Is in the Pattern
Flooring isn’t just about what you lay down—it’s how you lay it.
Straight planks are clean and classic.
Herringbone adds drama and elegance—great for entryways.
Diagonal/chevron patterns open up a room and make statement.
Parquet is like floor art—works beautifully in heritage homes.
Last year, we did a chevron wood floor in a city apartment that made the space feel twice as big. The client was skeptical at first, but now she’s obsessed.
Before You Choose, Ask Yourself…
We always ask homeowners a few key questions before we decide:
- Do you have pets or kids?
- Do you mind some maintenance, or do you want something hands-off?
- Are you planning to stay long-term or sell in a few years?
- Is the space prone to moisture or humidity?
These answers help narrow things down quickly. We have seen people fall in love with a material, only to realize it doesn’t suit their lifestyle. That’s where we come in—to balance dreams with reality.
Taking Care of Your Floors (Because They Take Care of You)
Once the floors are in, the job isn’t over. We always leave clients with some simple tips:
- Use mats at entrances—grit can scratch your floors fast.
- Lift furniture, don’t drag it.
- Mop smart: damp, not wet, and never harsh chemicals.
- Rugs can protect high-traffic zones and add style.
Trust us, a little love goes a long way. We once revisited a house one year after installation, and the hardwood still looked fresh—because they followed every tip!
